KWENA MOLAPO HIGH SCHOOL

Background :

Kwena Mapolo High school is situated in the Lanseria area on the corner of Cedar Road and Malibongwe Drive.

This is a government High School (Grade 8 to 12) and it falls into the category of the Quintel 1. The school is basically made by temporary containers laid out in a orderly format with 16 class rooms, there is a small library which is built into ¾ container, donated by the Rotary Club Sandton / Round table.

Problem statement:

There are currently 900 students registered aged between 14-19 years old with mixed gender composition. They are estimating this number to grow to 1000 plus students in the next year. All the classes are containers turned into class rooms without any air conditioning or ceiling fans. The temperature can be very severe during both harsh winter or summer as the school is situated in the open veld adjacent to the road and most of the windows are also broken or cracked.

The school produces excellent metric passing results which has been on average 90% for the last five years. Despite the bare minimum available resources, the school is in a very neat and well maintained condition. There is also a tennis court which is being used for now to play netball. There is an open field next to the netball court, but the surface is uneven, which can be converted into a soccer / cricket field.

Presently water to the school is supplied by the borehole from the poultry farm across the road on a voluntarily bases, but unfortunately the supply of water is under threat as the poultry farm as gone through a phase of rapid growth and they need this provided water supply first to satisfy there business needs, so soon there will be no water for the school. The water storage tanks are also leaking and have been repeatedly repaired which eventually need to be replaced.

Recently the school has received a donation of 30 computers from the Dept of Education but there is not internet connectivity as well as no computer tutors to teach computer literacy.

Possible interventions:

During the first visit and walk about in school premises and initial assessment prevail that the school need a help. The list under below provided by the school principle Micheal Malingana is as follows:

•Drilling of borehole and equipping it. Done ( Joburg water connected water to school in 2010)

•Replacement of the water storage tank. Done

•Painting of school. Done ( Sunninghill Muslim community )

•Broken window to be replaced. Done

•Canteen room. Done ( Sunninghill Muslim community)

•Plants & flowers Done

•School bus / combi Done ( corporate donation)

*Multi-purpose sport feild. Donated by Rotary club of Morningside/ Protech/khtula

We are proud to disclose that after our all above mentioned interventio school has improve its passing metric results from 83% to 95%, which is remarkable acheivement and its just shows that what a little help can do.

Building the soup kitchen at Kwena Molapo

Another intervention was to build the soup kitchen and feed 950 students every day. It became operational in September 2010.

Students are now eating 3 daily meals at school: breakfast, lunch and supper every day.

Water scarcity at School:

Kwena Molapo has had an acute problem with the regular supply of the fresh potable water forits students and staff.

Historically, the water supply was granted by the next door Poultry farm on voluntarily bases from their  borehole.

Recently, due to the increase in the local demand of poultry, the water supply was interrupted and sometimes they go for weeks with no water.

Thank GOD this is no longer the case. We have made enquiries with Joburg Water and Rand Water and through our friend Yfm CEO Kanthan Pillay we got Joburg water to get a main line supply to the school.

The 18th July 2010 was a symbolic day for Kwena Molapo: Joburg Water kindly provided the much need water supply to the school. This was also marked with the 67 minutes of the kindness on the Mandela day from Salman Khan Rotarian from the Morningside Club and Joburg water. In the picture on the left, the CEO of the Joburg water is seen supervising the connection.

Proundly posing with Kwena Molaplo priciple Michael Malingana and students
A proud moment with Kwena Molapo high school matriculant students, the school have produced 100% passing results with most of the students getting maximum distinctions in all major subjects. I have been involved and help this school since 2006, when they were only producing 82% matric results. What an improvement for a school which is made up of containers in an open veld and host 1000 students, most of the students walking from townships like Diepsloots, Thabo Mbeki and Zeinspruits 15 kilometer every day and study in extremely harsh conditions. it just shows us the nation is hungry to make South Africa a better place and have a better and brighter future.
